Veggies” Watercolor on Paper Painting available for sale at the Hub or online, Price: $300

My September workshop with 7 very talented ladies was a lot of fun.  We started with a brief overview of the history of pen, ink and watercolor. After a short demonstration of techniques, we got into the painting part of the session. This is always my favorite part of the workshop. It is so great to see everyone painting and creating.  I provided each person with drawings I have done in pencil to paint, and each one is a little different so everyone went home with a unique piece of art.  This time a few students brought some reference pictures, and I showed them how to transfer their image onto watercolor paper.  The resulting workshop experience was one of great satisfaction.  I will post some pictures from the workshop in this month’s blog.  So, this leads me to the final discussion of “sustainability” that I started in July.  The “buzzword” is defined as meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet theirs. There are three pillars of sustainability: Planet, People and Profits.  This month it is about the “Profit Pillar”. This is the most important one for me as a self employed artist.  I need to understand the first two pillars or I will not have any customers and profits, and realize it takes time for all this to develop.  Planet: It is not hard to find the right materials for my artwork so that the environment is not harmed long term. People: I am very fortunate to have certain people skills that make it easy for me to teach and help others learn how to paint.  I also put out a monthly blog.  So, these are the ways I am passing my knowledge on to future generations for the sustainability of art to continue!  With that said, here is my art news for this month:

“Bee Balm” Card for sale online or at the Hub: $4.

First Saturday at the Hub, October 5th:   I plan on being at the Hub from 10 to 2.  I will have some new pictures on my wall for October, so I hope you will stop by.  The theme this month will be scenes from the end of summer: fresh vegetables and flowers to be enjoyed or remembered.   I will have a few new cards and calendars are still available.

” A Workshop with Evy Okerstrom”:  Saturday, October 19, 2019 will be at the Hub on Canal.              Time: 10 to 4. This workshop will focus on basic watercolor techniques.  This is a great introduction to watercolor if you are new to it or just getting back into it.  You will be given drawings to paint or you can bring your own reference photo.  The cost is $70 for the session and if you need supplies, I can provide them for a $30 fee.  You can register at the Hub or the website online.  Email me at ero814@yahoo.com if you have any questions.

“Postcards from Florida”:  The Artists’ Workshop Gallery at 115 Canal Street, NSB, will have a new exhibit Saturday, October 5, with a reception from 4 to 7.  I am going to be a “Featured Artist”, so I hope you can stop by.  The exhibit will close December 4, 2020.

“Bird of Paradise” Card for sale online and at the Hub. $4

Here is my thought for today:  “Before you paint a scene, decide what interests you most. What first caught your eye? What part of the scene will be difficult to paint or will detract from the overall composition? Skip that part if possible or find a way to de-emphasize it. If there’s an object you’d like to move, check the values and colors around it first”.   Charles Reid: “5 Ways to Strengthen a Composition”, Watercolor Magazine, October 2019.
